Why is Korean bamboo salt so expensive?
Used in Korean cuisine as well as traditional Korean medicine, Korean bamboo salt is the most expensive salt in the world, selling for $400 per kilogram.
But why is Korean bamboo salt so expensive? The answer lies in the preparation of this salt. This salt is made in a very complex process.
How is Korean bamboo salt made?
Sea salt is packed in bamboo and burned nine times at high heat with pine fuel. After burning, when the salt has solidified inside the bamboo, it is taken out and powdered and filled into another bamboo.
The new bamboo is burned once more. This bamboo is burned at a maximum temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius. After that, blue, yellow, and black colors appear in the salt and its special taste is created. When bamboo is burned 9 times at 1500 degrees Celsius, the salt turns completely purple. It is called ‘Purple Bamboo Salt’.
The entire process is very laborious and time-consuming, taking more than 50 days to complete. Skilled craftsmen are employed to operate the special furnaces used for salt burning. As a result, the price of Korean bamboo salt is very high.
