Words like 'tradwife', 'skibdi', 'delulu' added to Cambridge Dictionary

Some new words that have been making waves on social media have been added to the world-famous Cambridge Dictionary. ‘Skibid’, ‘tradwife’ and many other hotly debated words are being added to the Cambridge Dictionary this year. A total of more than 6,000 new words have been added this year.

The word ‘Skibid’ is a meaningless and/or random word, but it became popular through the animated series ‘Skibid Toilet’ that went viral on YouTube.

The word can be used in the sense of ‘cool’, ‘bad’ or fun. According to its definition in the Cambridge Dictionary, it is a word that can have different meanings or is sometimes used meaninglessly. An example of this could be, ‘What the Skibids are you doing?’

Reality show star Kim Kardashian posted a video on Instagram with this word. In which a necklace with the words ‘Skibid Toilet’ is shown.

This is the name of the YouTube series. Earlier in 2018, Little Big Band released a song called ‘Skibidi’, whose video has been viewed more than 700 million times. The dance to the song also went viral at that time. On the other hand, the word ‘tradwife’ came as a short form of ‘traditional wife’ or traditional wife.

It refers to a married woman who does household chores such as cooking, cleaning and sharing them on social media.

The word ‘delulu’ has also been added to the world-famous Cambridge Dictionary. Delulu is the romantic form of the word ‘delusion’. Its definition is ‘a person who believes in something that is not real, usually on their own will.’

Since the Covid pandemic, the word ‘mouse jiggler’ has been added to the dictionary due to the trend of working from home.

This word means using a device or software in such a way that you are working even when you are not working. This word has also been included in the dictionary. Other work-related words, such as ‘work wife’ and ‘work spouse’ (a workplace relationship where two people depend on each other), have also been added to the dictionary.

In addition, the word ‘broligarchy’, which combines ‘bro’ and ‘oligarchy’, refers to a group of powerful and wealthy men, usually in the technology sector, who have or want to have political influence. The term was used to describe the presence of tech leaders such as Bezos, Musk and Zuckerberg at Trump’s inauguration.

“It’s fascinating and instructive to see how internet culture is changing the English language. We only add words that have the potential to be sustainable,” said Colin McIntosh, lexical programme manager at Cambridge Dictionaries. “It’s not every day that words like skibdi or delulu are added to the dictionary, but we believe they have a future.”
