What kind of image do you have of a banana peel? Slippery when you step on it? Right? That was often depicted in old manga, and in the Mario Kart series, it appears as an item that makes the opponent slip and spin.
We peel bananas before eating them. That's right, for us it's something we "throw away." That's why we depict bananas lying on the road as trash, and slippery when we step on them...
However, agriculture has made remarkable progress. Apparently, there is a type of banana that can be eaten with the skin, which was previously treated as trash.
Tokyo is currently carrying out "TOKYO GX ACTION" as an initiative to accelerate its "green transformation" efforts. "TOKYO GX ACTION CHANGING Decarbonization Action to Change the Future" is being held at Tokyo Big Sight on May 17th and 18th.
Among the exhibits at the event, I discovered a banana called "Echigo Banana." I was surprised at the price of 1,000 yen per banana, but I was intrigued because I heard that you can eat it with the skin.
Why can you eat it "with the skin on"?
There are two reasons. One is that it is the "Gros Michel" variety, known as the finest variety, with a high sugar content and thin skin.
The other is that it is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. This is the advantage of growing bananas in the snowy country of Niigata. It is said that it is difficult to grow bananas in northern regions, but there is also the downside that there are fewer insects, so no pesticides are needed, and in that respect northern regions are more convenient.
