Onions are very good for patients with type 2 diabetes. This is what researchers from the Endocrine Society of America have claimed.
Onions have a low glycemic index (GI), so they do not cause a sudden increase in blood sugar levels. Apart from this, onions contain a lot of fiber, antioxidants and sulfur compounds (such as allyl propyl disulfide), which are beneficial for diabetic patients. Researchers say that metformin is prescribed for type-2 diabetes. However, if someone has a low sugar intake and includes onions in their daily diet, then they will have to take less medicine. The sulfur compounds in onions can control the secretion of the hormone insulin.
