There's a tuna can that the developers confidently declare, "We can't make a more luxurious tuna can than this," making it literally the "highest quality" tuna can available. Generally, tuna cans are perceived as a budget-friendly staple, offering long shelf life and versatility in various dishes.
However, the 'Ocean Princess Tuna Toro BLACK LABEL' from Monmarche defies this conventional image of tuna cans. The price is an astonishing 5,400 yen per can. And of course, it doesn't contain caviar or crab; the ingredients are simply tuna and oil – an extremely minimalist recipe.
The canned tuna arrives individually packaged in a sophisticated, matte black box. Upon opening the box via a slit, you'll find a sticker with a serial number on the can—proof that the product was manufactured under strict quality control.
Pulling the pull-tab to open the lid reveals slices of tuna neatly arranged and submerged in a light green, viscous oil. At this point, it's clear that this is completely different from the canned tuna you'd buy in bulk at the supermarket.
The oil typically used in canned tuna is soybean oil or canola oil. Therefore, it's usually necessary to drain the oil before eating and often requires further cooking. However, with 'BLACK LABEL,' which uses the highest quality olive oil, we highly recommend trying it as is first. The thinly sliced tuna blends seamlessly with the smooth olive oil, resulting in a silky texture and a rich umami flavor that unfolds with every bite.
Incidentally, the olive oil used is "Oro Bailen Picual," an extra virgin olive oil from Spain that has been selected as one of the "Top 10 Olive Oils in the World." The remaining oil after you've finished eating can also be used in dressings or other ways, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
