Snails sleep for three years straight when in danger!

We know snails as slow-moving creatures. But their sleeping habits are even more surprising. Scientists say that snails can sleep for up to three years if necessary. They basically go into this long sleep as a survival strategy.

A wet and humid environment is very important for snails to survive. If the weather becomes excessively dry, their body water is quickly lost. Then there is a risk of death. In such a situation, snails go into a state of 'hibernation' (winter sleep) or 'estivation' (long sleep to survive in the heat).

Research has shown that at this time, the snail completely enters its shell and releases mucus from its body and closes the mouth of the shell tightly. This closing layer is called 'epiphragm'. It acts like a natural lid at the mouth of the shell and helps retain moisture in the snail's body.

During long sleep, the snail's heartbeat and body function (metabolism) decrease significantly. So they can survive for months, even three years, without food or water. When the weather is favorable again, they wake up and start moving normally.

Experts say that not all snails sleep for three years. This is a survival strategy for them, which is very effective for life in harsh environments.

Snails do not follow the day-night rule. They sleep for several hours at a time and sometimes remain active for up to 30 hours straight. So, the sudden emergence of snails after rain is part of their normal behavior.

According to researchers, snails are very tolerant animals. If necessary, they can take refuge in their shells and remain stationary for a long time. This is a feature of their unique lifestyle.
